    The Medicine Pathways for Advancing Tribal Healthcare (M-PATH) program supports 8 motivated students interested in Indigenous health disparities currently enrolled in college or university on their journey to becoming physicians. Designed as a long-term investment in a community-driven healthcare workforce, the program offers mentorship, clinical shadowing exposure, and support to students from a wide range of backgrounds. The program covers the costs for student travel, transportation, lodging, and food during the Boston based 3-week summer enrichment portion of the program.  If successful, the program can continue to be a part of the solution to addressing healthcare disparities facing Indigenous and rural communities for years to come.

    Description

    DentaQuest is partnering with SAID to support a DAT prep program for the purpose of preparing SAID member students with a desire to enter the practice of dentistry with academic coaching, admission test preparation and mentoring. Our goal is to enable SAID Pre-Dental Students to successfully gain admission to a U.S. dental college and see success in their first year of academics. Sponsored by DentaQuest, this scholarship is available to AI/AN undergraduate students who have not previously participated in this DAT Prep Program.

    Description

    The Indian Health Service (IHS) offers three scholarships for American Indian and Alaska Native students in order to educate and train health professionals to staff Indian health programs: Preparatory Scholarships, Pre-Graduate Scholarships, and Health Professions Scholarships. Recipients must be members or descendants of federally recognized, state-recognized or terminated Tribes. The scholarship program provides financial support in exchange for a minimum two-year service commitment within an Indian health program in your chosen health professional discipline.

    The National Native American Youth Initiative (NNAYI) is an intense enrichment program funded by the Association of American Indian Physicians and the Front Line Indigenous Partnership program (FLIP) based at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) Department of Emergency Medicine and the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative. NNAYI is designed to prepare American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) high school students to remain in the academic pipeline and pursue a career in the health professions and/or biomedical research. NNAYI’s curriculum is presented in lectures, interactive workshops, and field trips. Students will learn about various health professions, college and medical school admission processes, financial aid resources, and healthcare issues affecting AI/AN communities. Students will also network with AI/AN health professionals and learn about mentoring programs with AAIP member physicians.

    Description

    Mayo Clinic’s Native American Pathway Program (NAPP) is designed to recruit health care professionals of the future and support patient care for American Indian Tribes and Alaska Native groups. The program helps undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students who are members of, or a descendant of an enrolled member of, a federally- or state-recognized American Indian Tribe or Alaska Native group develop the skills and tools they need to matriculate and persist in medical school. The scholars participate in a five-week virtual summer program that offers coaching for career and medical school readiness, career exploration, introduction to scientific research, and remote clinical observation. The NAPP curriculum utilizes culturally resonant practices and is delivered with regard to identity, resilience, and well-being. Instructors come from many backgrounds and include professionals who are tribal members and tribal elders. Following the summer program, scholars receive MCAT preparation through The Princeton Review including 66 hours of instruction, practice tests, books and resources, and hotline assistance. Long-term mentorship with a Mayo Clinic physician helps ensure that scholars are well-supported in their journey to medical school.

    Description

    Native Americans Into Medicine (NAM) is a seven-week summer enrichment program for college sophomores, juniors and seniors interested in pursuing health careers. NAM Summer programs will provide students with both qualitative and quantitative research experience. Program instructors include a broad range of Native American faculty, health professionals, traditional elders, and medical students. Accepted NAM students earn a stipend for living expenses. Campus housing is also available for those traveling from outside the Duluth region.

    Description

    The Reimagine IndianS into MedicinE (RISE) Summer Academy is a 17-day intensive program for American Indian/Alaskan Native students that provides in-depth training and Indigenous learning opportunities to prepare scholars for the medical school application process. Focus of the program: Medical School Admissions and Application, Supplemental Basic Science Refresher, Cultural Engagement and Community Building, Medical Student Mentors, and Intensive MCAT prep provided through Kaplan.

    Description

    Career and Life Instruction for Matriculation Building (CLIMB) is a summer program for incoming medical students. The program is designed to assist new medical students to acclimate to the rigors and culture of medical school and develop a sense of community prior to the start of classes. Educational activities and sessions include an introduction to the curriculum, library resources and research skills, financial literacy, study and test-taking skills, personal wellness strategies, biochemistry review, and tours of the medical school and community.

    Description

    The UND INMED Summer Institute (SI) is a six-week residential academic enrichment program for American Indian students in grades 7 through 12 who are interested in health careers. SI provides students an opportunity to enhance their potential for success in a health career through daily classes in biology, chemistry, communications/study skills, health with basic first aid, math and physics. These courses are vital for a successful health career. In addition to the coursework, SI participants are given the opportunity to experience life on a college campus, listen to successful American Indian health professionals, learn more about various health careers, participate in educational field trips, and meet other American Indian students from across the United States.

    Description

    Med Prep is a summer program for American Indian college upperclassmen and graduates who are preparing to take or retake the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and apply to medical school. Instructors lead group and individual tutoring sessions on biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, behavioral science, and critical analysis and reasoning. Students take weekly practice MCAT tests.

    Description

    The Wy’east Pathway takes place over 10 months, from mid-September to early June of each year. The Pathway is designed to be culturally rooted uniquely for AI/ANs to prepare and familiarize them with concepts and spaces they will be navigating in medical school. One of the most valuable attributes of the Wy’east Medicine is the provision of conditional acceptance into the OHSU School of Medicine. This provision means that scholars will enter the OHSU School of Medicine as a first-year medical student provided that they (1) successfully complete the Wy’east Medicine Pathway, and (2) meet final matriculation requirements of the OHSU School of Medicine.
